Cast-Iron Grill Pan Lid, 40 cm
Description
Two cooking modes for an open-fire setup
This 40 cm cast-iron piece combines a cauldron lid with a standalone grill pan. The dual-purpose format is well suited to outdoor cooking: use it to cover a compatible cauldron, then turn it over and cook directly on its working side. The piece is intended for cooking over an open fire and has a stated weight of 4.8 kg.
In lid mode, it is designed for a 15-litre Tatar-style cast-iron cauldron. It closes the wide opening and helps retain heat and steam while pilaf, stews, soups, and other slow-cooked dishes are being prepared. Capacity alone is not enough to establish a correct fit, so the upper rim must also be checked. The lid measures 400 mm in diameter, and the seating edge of the cauldron needs to match its size and profile.
A grill pan for a second course
Turned over, the lid becomes a round pan with a ribbed grilling surface. It can be used for meat, fish, and vegetables, leaving defined grill marks where the food meets the raised ribs. This mode is particularly useful when the main course is already cooking in the cauldron and a separate batch of grilled food or a side dish needs to be prepared nearby.
Pan mode requires a stable, heat-resistant support suitable for the product's diameter and 4.8 kg weight. Place that support on firm, level ground above a controlled heat source. A central loop on the outer side provides a handling point when the piece is used as a lid. Cast iron and its fittings become hot during cooking, so lifting or turning the product calls for an appropriate tool or heat-resistant gloves.
Details that matter when choosing
- Cast-iron construction. The material heats gradually and retains substantial heat once the cooking surface has warmed through.
- 40 cm diameter. This measurement determines both the available grilling area and the fit on the rim of a cauldron.
- 4.8 kg weight. The substantial mass supports stability on a correctly selected stand, while also making careful two-handed handling important.
- Ribbed working surface. The raised pattern is intended for contact grilling and produces visible sear lines on suitable foods.
- Lid-and-pan format. One piece can cover the cauldron and then provide a separate surface for grilling.
Looking after the cast iron
Prepare the piece before its first cooking session in accordance with normal cast-iron care. Bring it up to temperature gradually and place food on the working side after it has heated. When cooking is finished, allow the iron to cool, clean away food residue, and dry the surface completely. A very light coating of cooking oil helps maintain the naturally seasoned layer that develops through continued use.
Do not put the piece away while it is damp; choose a dry storage area instead. Before each session, check that the cooking side is clean and that the selected support is steady. When using it as a lid, compare both the diameter and rim shape of the actual cauldron rather than relying on nominal capacity alone. With the fit and support confirmed, this grill pan lid makes it possible to move from covered cauldron cooking to direct grilling without carrying a second full-size pan to the picnic area or outdoor kitchen.
