Description

A collapsible hook for stand-off field work

The Model No. 2 sapper grappling hook is designed for remotely catching, pulling, and moving objects during professional field operations. It allows the operator to maintain distance while checking paths, opening doors, or interacting with an item that should not be approached before the situation has been assessed. Its configuration also permits use as an assault hook or a utility hook around a campfire. The method of use, direction of pull, and appropriate stand-off distance must be determined by trained personnel according to the task and the applicable procedure.

The grappling hook is made of steel and consists of three flat components. A long central piece forms the main body, while two side pieces create hooks facing in different directions. When assembled, this arrangement provides several possible catching directions. Openings and slots in the components take part in joining the pieces and attaching a pulling line. Once disassembled, the parts form a flat set that is easier to arrange in a field pouch, backpack, or equipment kit than a permanently assembled three-dimensional hook.

Construction and variant identification

  • Model No. 2 designation. The number identifies a particular construction variant. For correct selection, compare the overall profile of the central body, the outlines of the side hooks, and the positions of the openings and assembly slots.
  • Three separate components. Before use, the pieces must be aligned in their intended sequence and checked to ensure that each one occupies the correct position without skewing.
  • Hooks facing different directions. The side hooks provide more than one catching orientation. The position of the tool and the direction of pull should therefore correspond to the shape and location of the object being engaged.
  • Pulling line connection. The rope or cord must be selected for the operating conditions and relevant professional requirements. Its connection must not obstruct assembly, cover the hooks, or run across an edge in a way that could damage the line.

Inspection and care

Assemble and inspect the hook before moving into the working position. First check the relationship of all three components and the line attachment point without applying an operating load. The steel pieces must not show cracks, substantial corrosion, hazardous distortion, or damage around their openings and slots. The tool should not be used when any of these conditions is present. Operations involving a possible explosive hazard are restricted to appropriately trained personnel: the hook provides mechanical engagement and movement, but it does not detect or neutralise a hazardous object.

After field use, remove soil and other residue from every component and wipe the steel dry. Pay particular attention to the inner surfaces of slots, openings, and joining areas where moisture or particles may remain. Store the grappling hook disassembled in a dry place, with its pointed catches kept away from soft equipment that they could damage. Do not hammer distorted parts back into shape or alter their outlines: the geometry of each component affects correct assembly and the way the hook engages an object.
