Description

Build an even bed of coals with less tending

The Big chimney starter is designed to prepare a substantial batch of charcoal for a brazier or charcoal grill. Charcoal is loaded into the tall open container, while the initial flame is placed underneath. Air enters through the lower vents and travels upward through the fuel. Instead of heating only the pieces immediately next to the kindling, this vertical airflow encourages the load to catch progressively from the bottom toward the top. Once the charcoal has developed a steady glow, it can be poured into the cooking area and arranged for direct or divided-zone grilling.

The body measures 30 cm high and 22 cm in diameter, making this the large version intended for a generous charcoal load. It is made from 1 mm steel. Its faceted walls keep the fuel together in a vertical column, the open top releases rising hot air, and the slots around the lower section admit the air required for combustion. A projecting metal handle frame holds a wooden grip away from the main body and provides the control needed when carrying and emptying the starter.

Purposeful details for charcoal preparation

  • Large 30 × 22 cm format. The increased size is useful with a roomy brazier or whenever one sizeable batch of coals is preferable to several separate lighting cycles.
  • 1 mm steel body. The surrounding walls create a contained space that holds the charcoal in a compact upright load while it heats.
  • Lower air openings and an open top. This layout supports a natural upward draft through the charcoal and helps the fire advance through the load rather than remain concentrated at the base.
  • Offset wooden grip. The projecting handle gives the user a defined holding point for moving the starter and pouring the prepared coals into the grill.

Using the starter

Place the starter upright on a stable, non-combustible surface; the empty firebox of a brazier is a practical location. Position dry paper, small kindling, or another suitable lighting material beneath the lower section, then fill the body with charcoal. Ignite the material from below and allow the upward draft to heat the load. There is no need to add liquid lighter directly to the charcoal. A typical preparation period is approximately 15–20 minutes, although charcoal size, dryness, load volume, and airflow can change the actual timing.

Look for a steady glow and a pale coating of ash reaching the upper pieces. If much of the top layer is still dark, allow more time before pouring; transferring partly heated fuel too early can leave an uneven fire in the brazier. Hold the wooden section of the handle, keep the body balanced, and tip the coals into the intended area with a slow, controlled movement. Heat-resistant gloves remain essential because the steel body, handle frame, sparks, and charcoal are hot. Keep your face away from the open top and make sure other people stand clear while the starter is being lifted or emptied.

Care between barbecue sessions

After pouring the charcoal, return the empty starter to a non-combustible surface and let it cool completely. Shake out loose ash and wipe the body with a dry cloth. Before lighting the next batch, check that the lower slots are clear, since unobstructed air passages are important to the upward draft. The Big model suits garden cooking, picnics, and a permanent barbecue area where a larger amount of charcoal must be brought to cooking condition in one cycle and then distributed exactly where heat is required.
